NEW NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION!
Essay Title - Germany and Britain: a key alliance for the 21st century?
We are delighted to announce a new essay competition which is entirely separate from our Youthbridge Award competition. Schools can enter either or both competitions; it is entirely feasible for pupils from one school to win prizes in both, as the Youthbridge Awards are adjudicated ‘internally’ within each school, while this new essay competition is a national event.

Prizes
Category 1: Pupils in years 12 and 13:1st prize: £300 2nd prize: £200 3rd prize: £100
Category 2: Pupils in years 10 and 11:1st prize: £150 2nd prize: £100 3rd prize: £50
Book prizes will also be awarded. Prize-winners and their teachers will be invited to receive their prizes and certificates at an event in London.
Closing date: 1st May 2016.
Rules
- Maximum number of words: Category 1 (years 12 & 13) 2500 words. Category 2: Years 10and 11: 1500 words. Total in both categories includes footnotes, but excludes bibliography.
- The essay must be written in English and submitted in Times New Roman, font 12.
- Each entry must be accompanied by a declaration signed by the pupil and a teacher (see attached form). Quotations should be in the original language accompanied by a translation into English if necessary.
- Plagiarism: If you are using existing written material, you must cite the source. Presenting another author’s work as your own will lead to disqualification.
- The essay must be the entrant’s own work. Assistance from others may be sought, but entries which show signs of excessive external help will be disqualified. Judges are very good at spotting work that is not original!
- While entrants retain the copyright rights to their submitted essays, the BGA takes the submission of an entry as consent to use names and/or essays or parts of them in for its own purposes such as publicity. Winning essays will be published on the BGA website.
- Entrants should retain a copy of their original work as we cannot return or provide copies; nor can we give feedback on individual essays.
