Step one
Download the appropriate distribution of XAMPP from here. XAMPP allows you to turn your home PC into a web server. From this you can develop PHP websites and MySQL databases.
Step two
Download the appropriate distribution of MySQL Workbench from here. This is the same software we use in school for executing SQL, DDL and DML queries.
Step three
Run XAMPP and note down all the key login information you need to enter into the MySQL Workbench connection. More guidance can be found here.

You may also need a Windows update available here to run MySQL Workbench.
